Each December 31st Christians throughout the world observe what is known as the “Eve of the Circumcision and Name of Jesus.”
As you and I are right now probably more focused on the close of 2009 and the beginning of a new decade less than twelve hours from now, this festival might seem to be a somewhat peculiar.
Yet this tension between the holy and the profane—between the things from above and things of below is nothing new for December 31st—as we will see in a moment.
How can that be?
