Festival of St. Matthias – 2010

Homily by Associate Pastor Chris Tiews, 02/24/2010

Today we are celebrating the Festival of St. Matthias.

Not much is known about this apostle.

In fact, St. Matthias—whom we should not confuse with the disciple and Gospel writer Matthew—is mentioned only twice in Scripture.

Both Bible passages about St. Matthias are in Acts chapter 1, today’s second reading.

After Christ had ascended, St. Matthias was chosen to replace Judas Iscariot—who had betrayed Jesus and committed suicide.

According to Early Church tradition, St. Matthias was also one of the seventy-two whom Jesus sent out in Luke chapter 10, but Scripture does not record this.
