Sermon for the 2nd Sunday after Pentecost by Rev. Christian C. Tiews – 06/06/2010
“If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead” (Lk 16:31).
There was once a young treasure hunter named Joseph who claimed that on September 22, 1823, he had met an angel near Manchester, New York.
This angel had supposedly directed him to dig at a certain spot.
Joseph did so. He soon discovered a heavy chest, which he carried back to his home at a later point in time.
Inside the box Joseph later said he found several enormous golden plates, engraved with a mysterious text in an unknown language.
Fortunately, Joseph explained, the angel had also provided him with silver translation spectacles which enabled him to decipher the strange text.
The teachings engraved on these golden plates would lead to the formation of a new religion which would reject historical Christianity.
