Sermon by Vicar Chris Tiews, 07/12/2009
“For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved—it is the power of God” (1 Cor 1:18).
Elijah–one of the greatest Old Testament prophets.
Yet after experiencing one of the most amazing miracles the Lord had ever worked, Elijah had his back to a wall.
He was running for his life.
Just a few days earlier, the Lord had demonstrated who was really boss in the huge showdown between Elijah and the four hundred and fifty prophets of the idol Baal at Mount Carmel.
The false prophets had foolishly danced around the altar for hours, hoping that non-existent Baal would acknowledge their offering. Needless to say, nothing happened.
But when it was Elijah’s turn to present an offering to YHWH at the altar, fire came hurtling down from the sky.
