Trinity 10 2010 – The Rock of Offense

Sermon by Rev. Christian C. Tiews – 08/08/2010

“They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, as it is written, “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.”

There is a man in Houston, Texas, who is making a ton of money as a TV evangelist.

But this man is not a pastor. He never went to any seminary.

In fact, his college degree… is in marketing.

And with those marketing skills he has built up a billion dollar empire with a weekly TV show that promotes self-help.

He sells millions of books and has speaking engagements around the world.

But the issue at hand is not necessarily that this TV evangelist has become so successful.

The issue is that he is acting as a pastor—and as such should really know better—yet he is downplaying the second person of the Trinity, Jesus Christ.

You see, this TV evangelist is not proclaiming historic Christianity.

In fact, as you can read yourself in one of his best-sellers, Your Best Life Now, he presents at the center of the Christian faith an emasculated, politically correct, always happy generic God… 1,529 times to be exact.
At the same time, he seems to have a problem with Jesus Christ… because in that same book he refers to our Lord… only 33 times…

“They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, as it is written, “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.”

What this man is selling on TV is fake Christianity.

Why?
