Homily by Rev. Mason T. Beecroft, 08/01/2010
Our parable this morning is a bit disturbing, to say the least. In fact, St. Augustine was so bothered by it, he said, “I can’t believe this story came from the lips of our Lord.” St. Augustine was scandalized by this parable the dishonest steward. The sinless Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, commends a dishonest manager, who has stolen from his employer, for being shrewd, a clear violation of the Seventh Commandment, “Thou shalt not steal.” Why would the fulfillment of the Law, Jesus, offer such a commendation?
